In our effort to be more active as a family, we went out on a bike ride around a local lake yesterday.  I brought along sketchbooks for my daughter and I and challenged her to find five things on the bike ride that she could sketch and I did the same.  Then we looked up our collected items and painted illustrations of them. I learned that I saw a Mourning Coat butterfly (it flitted around me quite a bit-I think it was my orange shirt) and that the zillion dragonflies we saw were Blue Blurs.  Today we will use our illustrations as a starting points for story writing.  I got the idea from the fantastic book, Show Me a Story: 40 Craft Projects and Activities to Spark Children's Storytelling.  I love that I was able to incorporate exercise, art, writing, and nature all in one outing.  My husband didn't sketch, but he did write a haiku about dragonflies for me in my sketchbook while we rested by the stream.  It was a good weekend.
